Tips on Using Online Antique Auctions

From small beginnings to a full time business selling antiques at online auctions

Many people have something old in their garage or basement waiting to be thrown away the moment they move. What they do not realize is that among the junk they have aquired or inherited there may be one or two items that could be worth a small fortune. The only problem is, how to separate the junk from the treasure?

How to find that old antique or collectibles that could be worth selling. Look for old cupboard fillers, china beakers, old furniture, corkscrews, champagne taps, vintage clothes, shoes, books, etc. They may qualify as an antique or collectible item.

The next step is to find out the value of each item. Here are some tips for doing so:

1. Research – If you find a book published in 1780, it is obvious that it is worth something, but how much exactly? Visit an online auction and observe how much buyers bid for the same or similar items. Results can be surprising.

2. Ask the experts – Get impartial advice. Ask a couple of experts to evaluate your item. Some antiques such as coins, must be graded to confirm the selling price.

3. Join an online auction – Once you know the value of your item, it is time to get the cash. You can sell the items online by joining auctions. Using online auctions will allow you to reach a wider global market. This should mean more bids and a higher final selling price.

4. Starting the business – Having the items to sell is just the beginning; You also need a computer and some basic knowledge on how the auction works. Observe one or two auctions before putting your item up for sale. If you are still not happy you can get some help from online auction assistants. They will take care of posting the products online and monitor the items and the bidding amounts.

5. Know the basics – There are some pitfalls to look out for when selling at online auctions; Look out for "auction dummies", they bid against other bidders and drive the prices up but with no intention of buying the item. One giveaway is that they use free email accounts, and will not have a good rating on the online auction website.

6. Advertise – If you are new to online auctions and have many items to sell, or wish to start up an auction trading business, you may wish to create publicity so internet users know about your products and eventually buy. Please see www.advertising-notes.com for information on advertising and marketing.

7. Learning the ropes – It is a good idea to get help and advice while establishing an online business. However, success will largely depend on your ability to take control. Learn how the business works through online courses or by asking experienced, successful online sellers.

8. Taking the next step – A lot of sellers online have grown a full time business using online auctions. Most have started by selling their first 'antique' found in the attic.
