Tips on Buying Jewelry at Auctions

Getting married?
Why not buy your wedding ring at an auction?

Or do you just want to have the jewelry you’ve always wanted, but at a reasonable price?

Either way, you need to know how to buy the best jewelry at the best price that you can afford.

There are many auction sites where you can buy jewelry. There are the more popular general online auction sites. There are also specialized online auctions that specialise in trading jewelry.

You can also visit live auctions where real people meet face-to-face to trade jewelry and other items.

There are several advantages of going to a live auction.

First of all, you can be assured of the credibility of the sellers as they are all screened by the auction house that is hosting the auction. The jewelry being auctioned is also screened and tested to confirm that it is genuine before it is entered into the auction, to protect the image and reputation of the auction house. The bidders can also examine the items more closely.

The main disadvantage of live auctions is that bidders and sellers need to travel to the auction, and they may be held at inconvenient times.

The alternative is to buy the jewelry at online auctions. Since online auctions are conducted over the internet, there is no need to travel and anyone can participate from anywhere in the world.

There are disadvantages to online auctions; As all transactions are done online, buyers and sellers can remain anonymous from each other. The reputation and credibility of both can be difficult to check.

Most reputable online auction sites have a feedback feature where buyers and sellers can check who they are dealing with and confirm the reputation of the other party. Buyers are advised to check the feedback of the sellers first and read reviews about the previous transactions they did. Needless to say, it is not advisable to go bid with a seller that has several negative feedbacks.

Another helpful tip is to find auction sites that really specialize on jewelries. Although they may not be as popular as eBay or Yahoo! Auctions, they may have better offerings than those sites because they specialise in jewelry. An example of a specialized auction site is Bidz.com.

Before setting up to trade at any auction site that you do not know well it is a good idea to do a little research about the site - a simple search at google may reveal how long a site has been operation and if there are many negative comments about it. If there are no results at google it will be either a new site or a scam - trad with caution in both cases. Knowing what others have to say about a website will help you gauge the credibility of the site.

It will be also much safer to deal with sites that have hard set rules on possible scams and frauds. This is for the protection of both the seller and buyer. Policies on returning the items should also be explicitly stated in their terms and conditions.

If you are thinking of buying precious gems, diamonds, or branded jewelries, most specialized auction sites for jewelries will have them. It is better to choose a seller of these more expensive items who can show pictures, appraisal paperwork, and if possible, a certification from the Gemological Institute of America to prove that their gemstones and jewelries are genuine. It is best to ask further information about the item you want to buy to ensure the quality of the products and that you will get what you paid for.

Buying jewelry from auctions can be a fun and fruitful experience. You should be able to buy your jewelry at a discount at these auctions. But you must be patient and look out for the best deal, and check the details so that the item you bid on is really what you think it is.
